What IS Reiki?!

What is Reiki? I get this question all the time so let me help you to understand. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Basically what happens during the treatment is the therapists hands will hover over the body to work on an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If your "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or become stressed out quickly, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy, healthy, and more content with the way life is going on around you.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."
A treatment is like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many benefits that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.
While Reiki is spiritual in theory, it is not a religion, however it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not, and because Reiki comes from “God”, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
It sounds a little odd but when I went to the first Reiki training class and was so inspired I decided to get one of the symbols tattooed on my back I have a picture below of what the symbol looks like. I know that's not how usual people are inspired but I wanted to have it with me always. The symbol is called Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, this symbol sends the energy aiming on the center of the matters beyond time and space like a time machine. If you interpret the symbol from its drawing, which are Kanji letters in fact, you will find its meaning as “Every root is the true consciousness”. The true consciousness is attained when our little universe (our mind) unite with the great universe.

Something that I have done since learning Reiki is the chant it is very different than many other chants you might be used to this one brings you an understanding of one day...and that is just for today.

The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart
and chant these words with your mouth

  1. My wife and I undertook a trek to Everest Base Camp in February 2016 with Nepal Planet Treks and we cannot recommend this tour company highly enough. From meeting our guide Sanjib upon our arrival to being returned back to the airport following our trek, we were attended to at every stage. We were taken to the company offices for a briefing of what to expect and to go over the itinerary where it was obvious that were experts in this type of trek. We immediately felt confident and at ease that our trip would be a success at a time when we were a little nervous about our undertaking.

We have to single out our guide Sanjib for particular thanks - his reassurance, patience and knowledge were invaluable to us and we left him after our trek with a heavy heart. Everything he did for us felt like it was done out of friendship, rather than as part of his role. Our porter Sonam was also a great addition to the group - he ferried our duffel bags to each teahouse we stayed at, effortlessly it seemed despite the incline of the hills we were climbing, and always with a smile on his face.

This really was the holiday of a lifetime for us but it was made extra special by the excellent organization of of the incredible service delivered by its staff.

When we return to Nepal, we will definitely be using NepalPlanetTreks as our tour operator and will request Sanjib to rejoin us on a trek.

Many thanks to NJ and all his staff for an amazing trek.
